THE END

The main purpose of this blog was to share information regarding the moving of books from the old Zastrau system to the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC). As mentioned previously, on this blog, the moving of books have been completed in June. The spacing on the levels has also been corrected and we completed the marking of the rows on each level (see the photos below). This means that the purpose of this blog has been fulfilled and this will be the last entry.
However, it would not be fair to end this blog without a word of thanks to the following:
-          The Dewey Project Team: for your hard work, dedication and creative ideas.
-          To the 12 temporary staff members: this project would not have been completed if it was not for you and the effort you have put into this project. Thank you SO much for your hard work the past 10 months. A big cheer to all of you for a job well done!
-          The Library Staff: Thank you to the DFC staff who came to assist us in June. To the APK staff, thank you for assisting the clients in finding books, explaining the situation to them and sometimes bearing the brunt of angry clients.  We know that it has been extremely difficult at times and thank you for your commitment to the project.
-          Library Leadership: thank you for your guidance and support.
-          UJ staff and students: thank you so much for your patience during the move. We know that at times it was difficult to find books and it should be much easier now. We sincerely hope that you find the international classification system easy to use.
I would like to end off with this quote of Walt Disney:
If you can dream it, you can do it.

Day 54 - 4 July: No more moves

I am pleased to announce that phase two (the vertical move) was completed on Friday, two weeks ahead of schedule. This means that as from today books will no longer be moved from one level to another.

Books are now arranged as follows:

LEVELDEWEY No.
1000 - 226
2227 - 354
3355 - 399 & 500 - 599
4400 - 499 & 700 - 899
5600 - 699 & 900 - 999

We will spend the next two weeks getting the spacing right on each level and after that has been done, Dewey shelf marks will be printed and put up on each row. We would like to finish these two tasks by 18 July.

Thursday 30 June 2011

Days 52 & 53 - 30 June & 1 July

The next two days all books with Dewey numbers from 616 to 621.9999 will be moved from level 3 to level 5. This means that as from Monday all books with a Dewey number in the 600 class can be found on level 5.

A large number of books on level 4 have been relabeled the past few days. We will spent the next two days sorting these books and shelving them on the relevant levels.

Tuesday 28 June 2011

Day 51

Books with Dewey numbers from 610 to 616.5450 will be moved from level 3 to level 6 today. These are books medicine, human anatomy & physiology and pharmacology.

We will also continue today to put Dewey shelf numbers on books on level 4 with only Zastrau spine labels.

Sunday 26 June 2011

Day 50 - 27 June

The last move from level 5 to level 2 takes place today with the moving of books on culture & institutions, social groups and political science (Dewey numbers: 300 - 320)

Seeing that we have sufficient space on level 5 to accommodate the whole of the 600 class, we will start moving books from 600 to 620 from level 3 to level 5 over the next few days. Today we will be moving books on technology and medicine (Dewey numbers: 600 - 610).

Thursday 23 June 2011

Day 49 - 24 June

No books will be moved today only temporary shelves built on some of the levels will be removed.

the world will know peace.

Nine months ago.........

Nine months ago we started with the first phase to arrange the books in our library from Zastrau to Dewey. April Mahlangu took some photos on the day that I would like to share with you as well:

Wednesday 22 June 2011

Day 48 - 23 June

As from today we will start to move books on political sciences from level 5 to level 2. Today books on government systems, civil & political rights, political processes and slavery & emancipation (Dewey numbers: 321 -326) will be moved down to level 2.

We will also continue to replace the spine labels of books on level 4 with old Zastrau numbers with Dewey spine labels.

Tuesday 21 June 2011

Day 47 - 22 June

Today we will not be moving any books from one level to another. On level 2 we will continue to move books to the right so that we can get the spacing right for the moving of books from level 5, scheduled for tomorrow.

As mentioned a few months ago on this blog, we still have some books on level 4 that do not have Dewey spine labels. As from today we will be labeling these books with Dewey numbers and then interfile them.

Day 46 - 21 June

The last move from level 2 to level 3 will be done today with the moving of books on medicine, pharmacology and diseases (Dewey numbers: 614 - 617). This means by the end of the day no more books will be moved to or from level 3.

We will continue with moving books to the right on level 2 - to make space for books in the 300 class that still have to be moved from level 5 to level 2.

Sunday 19 June 2011

Days 44 & 45 - 17 & 20 June

On Friday we continued to move books on level 2 to the right (in order to have sufficient space for books from level 5 that still have to be moved to this level), books with Dewey numbers in the 335 class were moved to join 336. Today all books from 333.73 to 334.99 will be moved to join 335.

Books on labour, financial and land economics (Dewey numbers: 329 to 333) were moved down to level 2 on Friday and today all books on international relations (Dewey 327) will be moved to level 2.

On level 3 we are continuing to move books to the left. All books from 595 to 612 will be moved to today. That should create sufficient space for the remaining books in the 600 class that still have to be moved to level 3 from level 2.

Wednesday 15 June 2011

Day 44 - 15 June

Books with Dewey numbers from 336 - 338.9 on level 2 will be moved to the right on this level, in order to get the spacing right. A few books from level 5 will be moved down to level 2 - these are books on production and public finance. Dewey numbers the same as mentioned above.

The moving of books in the 500 class (on level 3) to the left will continue, so that we can have enough space for the books in the 600 class that still have to be moved to this level. We will also be moving books on medicine, anatomy and physiology from level 2 to level 3 (Dewey numbers: 610.7 - 613.26). Some books on surgery will also be moved from level 2 to level 3. (Dewey numbers: 617 - 617.759)
